LOUIS BOUGLÉ

Coupling the pleasures of fishing with sporting exploits had become a passion for Bouglé. Before 1900, he was already getting interested in the Casting competitions that were going on over the other side of the Atlantic. He spoke highly of the ‘Leonard’ rods used by the best Chicago casters. He was even part of the committee that presided over the Madison Square Garden Casting competition, New York in 1904. And after a call from his friend Prince Pierre d’Arenberg, he became the Vice Chairman of the Casting Club of France in 1910.

At the beginning of 1909 Prince Pierre d’Arenberg gathered a few enthusiastic trout anglers and created the organization committee of the 1st international spinning show. This 1st show took place in Bois de Boulogne on March 20th and 21st.

In spite of the bad weather this show was very successful. Many foreign sportsmen answered the call of the future Casting Club de France President. Among them were Mr. Seutin (Netherlands), Mr. Weismann (Switzerland), Mr. Plevins, Campbell, Muir, Crosslé, Mac Donald (England).

The english team won nearly all trials. No many French people dared compete with the English champions but curiosity was successful and the spectators followed the trials with great interest. The French champions to be had learnt an excellent lesson.

Considering the results of this 1st Sport Fishing Demonstration Prince Pierre d’Arenberg and his friends decided to constitute a club with a steady organization, the aim of which would be the organiaztion of these spinning shows. The constitutive general meeting took place on January 1910, 14th. The Casting Club de France settled down in a modest room situated 8 Place de la Concorde.

The 1st board of directors mostly consisted in those who had organized the 1909 show, i e. Prince Pierre d’Arenberg as president, Paul Caillard and L. Bouglé as vice presidents, Viscount Henry de France as general secretary, Etienne Mallet as treasurer, A. De Chavagnac, Canard, Maurice Faure, Gallay, Joyaux, Martin, Le Rocq, Docteur Würtz as members.

As soon as it was created the Casting Club de France was acknowledged by foreign federations as the only one qualified to confirm the concours records established in France.

The events of the 2nd International Spinning Concours take place on March 10th 11th 12th and 13th 1910.

Stimulated and trained more French anglers show their interest. This shows the start of most of our compatriots : Decantelle, Bouglé, Viscount de France, Louche and Perruche. These ones show their improvement by carrying off a few prizes. Thus encouraged the Casting Club de France take part in the meeting organized in Heudon by the British Amateur Fly and Bait Casting Club of London. The president and 3 club members (Bouglé, Decantelle and Perruche) take part in the events and several prizes are wun by the French team.

1910 C.C.F. publishes its first year book.

Then, in 1924, an article was released by the C.C.F :

It is with immense regret that we have learnt of the death of one of our most venerable ex Vice-Chairmen, Louis Bouglé. Still only 60 years old, he took an active part in the administration of our Club, and was offered the Chairmanship when our distinguished Chairman, Prince Pierre D’Arenberg, prematurely passed away.

Louis Bouglé was a Sportsman in every sense of the word.

It was him that introduced American style Casting with a rod in one hand and a multiplying reel. A proven theorist and practitioner, he won several prizes in our annual competitions and allied a great feel for what it takes to be an angler with a deep knowledge of what we permit ourselves to call the Art of Fishing. Very learned, with a fine and cultivated spirit, he was particularly versed in the specialist literature of our sport where the English excelled well before us, and possessed a varied and intimate library of all the published works that dealt with our sport in both English and French.

His refined and assured taste for sport, though, did not exclude his great admiration for all things artistic.

Bouglé was ultimately, and especially, an honest man, a true friend, faithful and devoted, and we pay our last respects to the beauty of this person who, let us not forget, did not hesitate in 1914 to offer himself to our country for active service at 50 years of age. His friends are not far from thinking that the illness that defeated him was a consequence of this final act of devotion.

We acknowledge our ex-administrator with the fondest of memories and we ask his brother and friends, his adopted family, to accept our strongest and most sincere condolences.
